REAL PEOPLE
When a client asks me to shoot the complimentary campaign stills for a project I am always delighted to help. When they ask if I am happy to shoot at the same time the TVC is being filmed I am less thrilled (it makes me feel less special…)
Working around a commercial motion crew can be a competitive tango. I know their little production hearts drop when they hear that stills will be done on the same day. I, however, am an experienced professional, obviously. I am well practised at dancing in and out, grabbing talent before the disappear for a coffee, working quickly, working silently when required and pushing in loudly when required. Reading scene breaks and taking full advantage of them. Phew. Long days powered by coffee and twix.
The motion crew were well aware of what I needed to get and understood that I would need a little time to get it. It was a glorious exercise in symbiosis and an absolute pleasure.
After a long set up and pre-light the cast were brought in to do their thing. I worked in silence getting a few action shots during rehearsal and capture, and then stole them away during set changes to shoot some more controlled ‘hero’ shots. working in this way made the whole collection of stills and portraits beautifully consistent and I was able to match my processing with the LUT that would be used by motion so the two sides of the output were perfectly complimentary. As they should be.
“ The PPL campaign shoot was a dream!”
